The great 2024 eclipse road trip
Marfa Lights · Days meet Nights
The rough plan
The 2024 total solar eclipse will northernly cross the American border at Eagle Pass, Texas at 12:27 pm CST on Monday, April 8, 2024. The moon’s shadow will be traveling 1,651 miles per hour.
The plan is to be in position on high ground looking south in an area maximizing the most of the 4 minutes and 27 seconds of totality. If we’re lucky, the shadow will be visible speeding across the open plains.
We’ll have accommodations in the dope town of Marfa, Texas, about four hours away. We’ll arrive in Marfa on Sunday, April 7, stay two nights, and leave to get home late on Tuesday, April 9.
Some of us will be staying in the Chiricahua mountains on Friday and Saturday night.
Brian’s half-assed itinerary
Friday, 4/5/2024
Leave Phoenix, travel 3.5 hours to Bonita Canyon Campground in the Chiricahua National Monument near Willcox, Arizona.
Stay two nights there, or possibly explore and get another campsite among many on the east side of the Chiricahuas, for easier access to Marfa. (6 hours from the east side, rather than 7 hours from the west side.)
Sunday 4/7
Arrive Marfa, stay somewhere cool, enjoy great food and fun and friends.
Monday, 4/8
Leave plenty of time to get to Peloncillo Peak, a car-accessible high spot for viewing. 281 miles and 4.5 hours from Marfa.
Arrive back in Marfa around sunset.
Tuesday, 4/9
Explore Marfa in the morning, and drive the 600 miles and 9 hours back home.
Peloncillo Peak: our viewing spot
Hopefully this is our sweet spot for viewing, close dead center of the totality, on the last southernly high ground of the Anacacho Mountains, overlook the flat plains which drop to the Rio Grande. Car accessible.
